Many of us through the 3rd and 4th quarter of FY20 have been urgently thrust into both working from home, and managing a team who are likewise dispersed.
We have coped - largely! We are adaptable, capable and professional people and we do what we need to do, to get the job done.
As time goes by however, things start to fray at the edges. The virtual meetings that started off as fun and curious are now hard work; staff members are struggling with their home environment, the customer experience is suffering, and perhaps personal safety has become a concern. It then becomes about adjustment and sustainability - moving from throwing things urgently together to support working from home, to making the purposeful adjustments to our systems of work to ensure productivity remains high, and that we can sustain this environment for long periods.
Many businesses are starting to think that the working from home arrangements have a longer term future, and that beyond COVID-19, sustaining a working from home model will create a more efficient business model.
The 'MyPlace' program is designed to support businesses move into the 'adjust and sustain' phase. A cross collaboration with Andrew Hardwick from Hard Edge, Mel O'Brien, and myself, 'MyPlace' provides a framework for businesses that include a working from home workforce segment. The framework works across 4 pillars : Connect; Perform; Wellbeing; Develop. It provides free downloadable guidelines for leaders and employees, and access to further organisational support.
